Entry Requirements:
- Participants must provide 100 points of identification and be 18 years of age or over.
- Maths is a major part of the theory component and a sound understanding is essential to be able to complete this training.
- You must have the ability to use and understand Basic English.
- Trousers‚ shirt and safety boots are required to be worn at each session.
Our three day training course is for people who have minimal or no bridge and gantry experience.
It’s an intensive, hands-on training course, with the majority of the time spent operating the crane.
A strong theoretical and calculations component is also included that focuses on safe operating procedures.

On successful completion of the program you will receive a Statement of Attainment for:
- TLILIC0016 – Licence to operate a bridge and gantry crane
This program is nationally recognised.
You will receive an interim High Risk Bridge and Gantry Crane licence, in which you must lodge at a Service Tasmania outlet within 60 days. You will also need to pay them the prescribed fee.
You will gain an understanding of:
- Pre – operation checks
- Plan work
- Conduct routine checks
- Transfer loads
- Shut down
- Secure the crane

1. Prepare to load and unload plant
1.1 Access, interpret and apply load handling documentation to ensure work activity is compliant
1.2 Obtain, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
1.3 Identify hazards and environmental issues, assess the risks and implement control measures in line with workplace policies
1.4 Select and wear personal protective equipment required for work activities
1.5 Obtain and display signage, and erect barriers to isolate the loading and unloading site from general traffic flow in line with safe work practices
2. Load the plant in line with established requirements
2.1 Confirm the dimensions and capacity of the float or trailer to safely carry the plant
2.2 Select tools and loading equipment in line with work requirements
2.3 Identify faults, and rectify or report prior to commencement of work, within scope of own responsibility and according to workplace procedures
2.4 Confirm preparation procedures of the plant for transportation has been completed
2.5 Place and secure loading aids in line with workplace procedures
2.6 Confirm the loading procedure with operator and/or guide before loading commences
2.7 Move the plant item onto the trailer or float and halt at the designated position as per workplace procedures
2.8 Secure plant to trailer or float in line with workplace procedures
3. Unload the plant in line with established requirements
3.1 Confirm the unloading procedure with operator and guide before unloading commences
3.2 Place and secure unloading aids, including ramps, in accordance with the trailer or float specifications
3.3 Slacken securing devices and remove according to workplace procedures
3.4 Move the plant item off the trailer or float and halt at the designated position
3.5 Stow loading aids including ramps, bridging materials and securing devices as per workplace procedures
4. Pack Up
4.1 Reach stacker boom and container spreader are secured as required in accordance with manufacturer specifications and safe work procedures
4.2 Relevant motion locks and brakes are applied as required in accordance with manufacturer specifications, safe work procedures
4.3 Stabilisers (if fitted) are raised and secured in accordance with manufacturer specifications, safe work procedures
4.4 Reach stacker is parked to avoid hazards and shut down in accordance with safe work procedures
4.5 Post-operational reach stacker checks are carried out in accordance with manufacturer specifications, legislative responsibilities and safe work procedures
4.6 Reach stacker is secured to prevent unauthorised access/use in accordance with legislative obligations, responsibilities, safe work procedures
Assessment
Mandated national assessment tools are used and include Theory, Calculations and Practical Assessments
